Jira for Mac: native clients and desktop options

Updated 23 October 2026 · by the Starlie team

You can use Jira on your Mac through a native third-party client or the browser. Starlie is a native Mac app for everyday Jira work. Atlassian stopped supporting its own Jira Cloud for Mac app in 2022.

This comparison is for people who already use Jira and want a different way to work with it on a Mac. We make Starlie, and the table marks it as ours. The browser or another client may suit you better.

Choose for your daily work

A native Mac workspace without replacing Jira

Your projects stay in Jira. Starlie gives you a native Mac interface to find issues, update details, comment and move cards on a sprint board. It supports Jira Cloud and self-hosted accounts. During the trial, open your own projects and check the workflows and fields you rely on.

Starlie does not require a Jira-side add-on. Your organization may still restrict app installation, OAuth authorization, tokens or access to Jira. Jira Cloud sign-in uses Atlassian OAuth. For self-hosted Jira, you connect with your instance address and a token. See the setup guide and security details.

Jira in its own window

If you mostly lose Jira among browser tabs, a browser web app or a site wrapper may be enough. You keep the web interface and all its features. Jira is still a web page in that window, and its servers respond no faster.

A smaller menu-bar tool

Tiramissue has a menu-bar list and a separate issues window. Consider it if you want quick access more than a full app. Its publisher page lists the views and requirements.

A client your Jira admin has to set up

Desktop App for Jira runs on Mac and Windows and connects through the Desktop Connector for Jira. The client download is free, but the connector is paid. Check its licensing and compatibility with your administrator.

A native client from GitHub

Balm's README covers its SwiftUI interface, Jira Cloud support, Homebrew install and ad-hoc signing. The source is public, but the license section says all rights reserved, so it isn't open source. Setup differs from an App Store download, so read its requirements first.

What happened to Jira Cloud for Mac and Bee?

Atlassian announced it would stop supporting Jira Cloud for Mac from February 2022 and pointed users to the browser and mobile apps. Third-party Mac clients still exist.

Bee was another native client. Its developer discontinued it in September 2018, and nobody maintains it now.

What a desktop client cannot fix

A client changes the interface you use. Your team's workflow rules and permissions stay the same, and Jira's servers respond no faster. If the problem is how your organization set up Jira, a different client may not fix it.

Replacing Jira itself is a decision for your whole team. See Linear vs Jira. If you mainly want better keyboard habits in the browser, start with Jira's shortcuts.

Frequently asked questions

Does Jira have a desktop app?

Not from Atlassian, which stopped supporting its Jira Cloud for Mac app in 2022. Third-party desktop clients exist. Starlie is a native Mac client for existing Jira accounts.

Is there a Jira desktop app for Mac?

Yes. Starlie is a native SwiftUI app for macOS 15 or later. It works with Jira Cloud and self-hosted Jira. The table above compares it with the other Mac options.

How can I download Jira for Mac?

Jira itself runs in the browser, so Atlassian has nothing to download for Mac. To get a Mac app for Jira, download Starlie from the Mac App Store. It has a seven-day free trial and needs macOS 15 or later.

Does Atlassian Jira have an app?

Yes, for phones. Atlassian publishes Jira Cloud apps for iOS and Android, but it has no desktop app for Mac or Windows. It ended support for its Jira Cloud for Mac app in February 2022, so on a computer you use the browser or a third-party client.

How can I download Jira Desktop for Windows?

Atlassian has no Windows desktop app, and Starlie is for Mac only. In the Microsoft Store there is a third-party app called "Desktop App for Jira". It needs a paid add-on installed on the Jira site.

How much does Starlie cost?

After a seven-day trial, US prices are $4.99/month, $29.99/year or $49.99 for lifetime access. Local storefront prices may differ. See pricing.

Does Starlie need Jira administrator approval?

Starlie needs no Jira-side add-on. Your organization may still require approval for desktop software, OAuth authorization, tokens or Jira access. Check its policies before connecting.

Can I use Starlie instead of every Jira browser screen?

Starlie covers everyday issue work, search and boards. Keep the browser for administration, reports and Marketplace features that Starlie doesn't have. Try your own workflow during the trial.
